Rachel Jump

(American, b. 1991; resides in Chicago, IL)

Rachel Jump creates intimate black and white photographs that investigate notions of memory, intimacy, and identity. For her Origins series (2013-ongoing), Jump photographs herself, her family members, and her partner over the course of several years. The series is inspired by the transient nature of her childhood and the many homes she resided in at a young age. Photographing with a view camera in the woods near her parents' current residence in Massachusetts, Jump slows down to reconnect with her memories of the forest she wandered as a child. She places her loved ones in many of the images, and using natural light and shadow creates a sense of otherworldliness and timelessness.

Rachel Jump completed received her BFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design (2014). She held her first solo exhibition at Alibi Fine Art, Chicago, IL (2015). Her work has been included in group exhibitions throughout the United States, including at the Midwest Center for Photography, Wichita, KS (2017); Texas Women’s University of the Arts, Denton, TX (2017); Carter House Gallery, Redding, CA (2016); SE Center for Photography, Greenville, SC (2016); and Panopticon Gallery, Boston, MA (2015). Her work has been featured in various publications, including LENSCRATCH, FotoRoom, Feature Shoot, The Ones We Love, LDOC, and Papersafe. She was an artist-in-residence at the Chicago Artists Coalition in 2016-17.
