Long fascinated with the eccentric, Victoria Maidhof documents the lives of those with unconventional lifestyles for her ironically titled series, Chronicles of the Ordinary. Inspired by the work of Diane Arbus and Mary Ellen Mark, Maidhof creates intimate portraits, situating herself in communities over an extended period and forging friendships with those whom she photographs. Often taken in her subjects’ homes, some images embody the look of a candid snapshot, further enhanced by heavy flash and high contrast. Handwritten text pieces accompany the images, describing interactions with and observations of her subjects and continuing the narrative. The series demonstrates the artist’s earnest searching for threads of human connectivity, no matter the circumstances of one’s life.
Victoria Maidhof completed her BFA and MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute (2010, 2016).
