Susan Carr photographs details of American homes that have been occupied by people who have lived in the same place for at least forty years. Square black-and-white photographs neatly frame carefully positioned figurines, wildly patterned wallpaper, and assorted memorabilia accumulated over a lifetime. These interiors, some carefully orchestrated and others more haphazardly put together, reflect such personal and idiosyncratic choices that they become portraits, though there are no people in them.

Carr earned her BA from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo (1985). Co-owner of Carr Cialdella Photography and second vice president of the American Society of Media Photographers, Carr has had her work published in Big Idea; Frank Lloyd Wright’s Samara, Winged Seeds of Indiana; and Michigan Friends of Photography Journal. She has exhibited most recently at Retro Gallery, Kalamazoo; the Arts Council of Kalamazoo; and the Kellogg Foundation, Battle Creek, Michigan.
