Checefsky’s large, black-and-white photograms create densely layered patterns from small items like bugs and toy soldiers. The photogram process consists of putting objects on light sensitive paper so that, after being exposed to light, the area they covered remains the color of the paper, a sort of white silohette. Using multiple exposures, varying the direction and amount of light, Checefsky creates a beguiling sense of depth. The items’ outlines are individually identifiable from close-up, but from a few steps back the shifting tonalities of overlapping shadows blend into a richly complex abstract plane.
