Marc Hauser is perhaps best known for his portraits, their classically simple lighting and the blank backdrops that give center stage to the subtle and individual expressions of his subjects. Yet Hauser’s studio accommodates everything from celebrity portraits to neighborhood kids. On location he shoots movie stills with the same gusto as he photographs men on the street.

Hauser was born in Chicago, and has been photographing professionally since he was a teenager. Playboy was one of the first publications to feature his pictures, which have also appeared in Time, Life, People, and Vogue, among many others. He is the author of Friends and Acquaintances, Halloween in Bucktown, Road Pirates, and Images from Within: portraits of people confronting mental illness.
