Keri Pickett’s Faeries series records the life and personality of radical faeries assembled for a summer retreat. Begun in 1994, the project was shot over six years at an annual ten-day meeting in the northern Minnesota sanctuary Kawashaway. Though the mood of this collection of square black-and-white pictures is alternately contemplative, whimsical, and mysterious, Pickett’s extended relationship with the faeries allows for an intimacy and sympathy evident throughout.

Pickett was born in Charleston, South Carolina on June 4, 1959. She holds a BA in art from Moorhead State University (1982), and is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, a Minnesota State Arts Board grant, three Jerome Foundation grants, and three McKnight Foundation Photography fellowships. She is the author of three books of photography, including FAERIES: Visions, Voices & Pretty Dresses (Aperture, 2000).
