Collisions: Barbara DeGenevieve, School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Photography is a powerful medium. It has the ability to create potentially indelible images in the mind of the viewer – unerasable. It can also turn the viewer into a voyeur, allowing, even demanding, the fetishistic gaze.
This is a strange collection – both humorous and unsettling. Most are pictures of people punctuated by a few objects and animals. Each image is in a conversation with the image that precedes and follows it, and the signifiers in each photograph are meant to trigger a lingering response in the viewer. Seeing these images in a public space will hopefully be thought-provoking, if not an obtuse provocation.
