Ciné-Roman For Jan: Thomas Roach, artist
Ciné-Roman For Jan is a selection of forty-two works from the MoCP’s collection.
It is a filmic essay consisting of photographs I responded to while cycling through the museum’s database by artist surname in reverse alphabetical order—Zimmerman to Abbott. (I printed copies of a much larger selection and arranged them on the floor of my office: omitting three-quarters and making pairings and a looping sequence with what remained.) In large part, my selection is related to the process of selection, or the way in which one looks for narrative or particular subject across photographs that carry an overwhelming volume of incidental information individually—for this reason, I was very attracted to Andre Kertesz's reading photographs. The title refers to Jan Tichy, whose recent work with the MoCP’s collection informed the stuttering binary structure of the final sequence.
