Self-Portrait: American Photobooks and American Photoculture of the 1970s
Peter P. Blank, Head, Reader Services, Ryerson & Burnham Libraries, Art Institute of Chicago
Starting with Lee Friedlander’s hugely influential Self Portrait (1970) and proceeding through his American Monument (1976), Lee Friedlander: Photographs (1978) and Factory Valleys (1982) this presentation will examine the diverse trends on 1970s American photography through an examination of photography books. Complimented by prints from the Museum’s collection, Blank will examine the culture of 1970s American art photography through books by Ralph Gibson, Danny Lyon, Bill Owens, Ed Ruscha, Susan Meiselas, Robert Adams, and others.

Learn the basics of digital imaging in Columbia College’s state-of-the-art facilities. This workshop will begin at the museum where we will look at computer-generated images from the museum’s collection and then move to the photography department. Bring a favorite negative or image to reproduce.

Exhibiting artists Marc Lüders, Michael Fajans, Eddy de Vos, and Randy Hayes will discuss the conceptual implications of violating the surface of the photograph with paint, or in the case of Fajans, of basing his paintings on photographic source material. Moderated by museum director Rod Slemmons.
