Listening Event: Sigur Ros

The Museum of Contemporary Photography and Filter Magazine will host an evening listening event of new music by Icelandic rock group Sigur Ros. The new album called Takk… which is Icelandic for “Thank You”, will be played throughout the museums exhibition space from 7 – 9 pm on September 7th, 2005, five days before the album’s official release. The listening event is free and open to the public.

Lecture: Joel Peter Witkin

Photographer Joel Peter Witkin, whose work has moved from controversy to photographic canon will make a rare appearance to discuss his influencial career.

Film Screening: Murder on a Sunday Morning

Where: Ferguson Theater, 600 S. Michigan

Winner of an Academy Award for best Documentary Feature in 2001, Murder on a Sunday Morning tells the suspenseful story of fifteen year old Brenton Butler who was, with little concrete evidence, arrested in Florida and charged with murder while walking near a hotel where a tourist had been shot at point-blank range.

Panel Discussion: Mistaken Identities: Stories of the Wrongfully Convicted

When: Thursday, 6 pm
Where: Ferguson Theater, 600 S. Michigan

Panelists will discuss the legal issues and personal repercussions surrounding wrongful convictions. Participants include Ronald Cotton, exonerated in 1995 after serving ten and a half years of a life sentence; Jennifer (Thompson) Caninno who misidentified Cotton as the man who raped her and is now an outspoken opponent of using photographs and composite sketches to identify and condemn individuals; Chris Ochoa, who was exonerated in 2001 after serving twelve years of a life sentence and is currently studying law at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Rob Warden, Executive Director of the Center on Wrongful Convictions, Northwestern University School of Law. Moderated by Museum Manager of Collections Corrine Rose.

Photographic Excursion

Join museum Midwest Photographers Project artists Jonathan Gitelson and Brian Ulrich and bring your (analogue or digital) camera on a walking excursion to explore the landscapes, architecture and people of downtown Chicago as you learn basic composition and camera techniques. Afterwards, join the artists for beer and conversation at a local pub.

The Innocent: Film Screening and Discussion with Director Lauri Feldman

The Innocent (2005) is a documentary about men and women wrongly sentenced to death, who survived to tell about it. Producer and Director Lauri Feldman will introduce the film and answer questions following the screening.
