Photographer Gary Porter and journalist John Schmid, creators (with Rick Romell) of the award-winning report Made in China: The New Industrial Revolution published by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in December of 2003, will be present to discuss their project on view, which examines how China’s manufacturing power has impacted Wisconsin companies, families and communities.

The World (139 minutes)
Internationally acclaimed Chinese film maker Jia Zhang-ke explores globalism and the rapid cultural and economic changes happening in contemporary China through the lives of the twenty-somethings who come from China’s remote provinces to live and work in Beijing’s World theme park. Dislocated and alienated, the lives of these young workers unfold amid replicas of global attractions including the Taj Majal, Eiffel Tower, the great pyramids of Egypt and even the Manhattan sky line.

In conjunction with the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, the museum will host a reception and discussion on China’s rapidly changing society and rising influence as a global economic power with Chinese scholar Dali Yang, professor of political science, University of Chicago and exhibiting artist Jun Yang.
