Film Screening: La Soufrièr and Lessons of Darkness
September 6, 2007
Dir. Werner Herzog
600 S. Michigan Ave., Room 921 (9th floor)
6pm
The stunning beauty of pristine as well as devastated landscapes is the subject of these two films by German filmmaker Werner Herzog. La Soufrièr(1976, 33 minutes) documents an impending catastrophe—a volcanic eruption on the island of Guadeloupe that has caused most of the island’s inhabitants to flee. Placing himself and his crew in grave danger, Herzog interviews those who chose to stay and “wait for death” and notes the structures and detritus of lives left behind. Lessons of Darkness (1992, 52 minutes) shows a visually exquisite hell on earth and the environmental aftermath of the first Gulf War: the oil well fires in Kuwait.
