Join us for a Focal Point live podcast taping and conversation between artists Xyza Cruz Bacani and Jason Reblando discussing experiences of the Filipino diaspora. In We Are Like Air (2013–2018) Cruz Bacani (b.1987 Philippines) chronicles the migration and domestic labor experience in Hong Kong of her mother, Georgia. This visual story spans two countries, three generations, and two families. Reblando (b. 1973 United States) photographed his series Home and Away (2005-2017) to investigate the diaspora as a broader meditation on notions of belonging and place. His work also presses toward a deeper understanding of historical Spanish, Japanese, and American colonization of the country. Through their respective projects, these two artists explore the complex circumstances that lead families to leave their homes to work overseas, as well as feelings of loss and longing that come with separation from one’s origins. This virtual event is organized by Asha Iman Veal, Associate Curator at MoCP and curator for the current exhibition Beautiful Diaspora / You Are Not the Lesser Part.

This program is presented in conjunction with PHotoESPAÑA 2022.

Focal Point is a podcast exploring the artists, themes, and processes that define—and sometimes disrupt—the world of contemporary photography. Each episode engages two artists in conversation about their respective practices, as well as each discussing one inspirational photograph from the Museum of Contemporary Photography’s permanent collection.
