Artist, author, historian, and curator Deborah Willis uses the medium of photography to explore cultural histories related to gender and the Black body. A two-time NAACP Image Award recipient and Professor and Chair of the Department of Photography and Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, Willis’s seminal book Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers 1840 to the Present was recently republished for its 25th anniversary in 2025.
