Birches: Gretchen Garner

About the Exhibition

An exhibition of seasonal color photographs of trees by Gretchen Garner, a Midwestern photographer of the landscape.  About this series of 16×20” prints from color negatives, Garner writes: “Lovely in summer, birches are even more beautiful in winter when the subtle pink and gold of the ‘white’ bark stand out in a pale and snowy world.  In spring the fragile skin of a young tree against the rugged bark of an old one offers a sensuous vignette.  In autumn, a brief rush of color turns the sight of birches into a tapestry shot with gold.  Alongside this beauty, the delicacy, hardiness and usefulness of this northern tree are for me rich with meaning.”
