Personae: Portraits from the Collection Curated by Dawoud Bey
About the Exhibition
Photographic portraits are ubiquitous in our society, but not every photograph of a person is considered a portrait. In this exhibition, photographer Dawoud Bey examined this issue and others by establishing a dialogue among various photographs. The exhibition asked: What constitutes a portrait? What effect does the presence of the camera have on the dialogue between subject and author? How do portraits change depending on their context? How is the notion of subject and author conflated in a self-portrait?
