Skrebneski: The First Fifty Years

About the Exhibition

This retrospective exhibition featured 154 works by one of the greatest fashion photographers of the twentieth century, Victor Skrebneski. Photographs were selected from work originally appearing in major magazines in America and Europe, from exhibitions in galleries and Museums around the world, and from several books. His associations with the most elegant names in fashion were reflected in the work shown for Chanel, Galanos, Givenchy, Carolyne Roehm, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Town and Country. The portraits of celebrities include David Bowie, Iman, Andy Warhol, Orson Wells, Bette Davis, Sharon Stone, and Venessa Redgrave. Skrebneski, a Chicago native, donated 162 prints to the Museum’s permanent collection. The Book Skrebneski: The First Fifty Years, with essays by Dennis Miller, former director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography, and Robert Sobieszek of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art was published in August 1999. Proceeds from the book and gala were used to benefit the permanent collection and educational programs of the Museum.
