About the Exhibition

The City: Harbor of Humanity was guest-curated by architectural historian and critic Franz Schulze. Affiliated with Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois, Schulze is a prominent scholar on the work of the architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson. The exhibition he has selected includes work from a number of accomplished artists, including Berenice Abbott, Robert Adams, Harold Allen, David Avison, Harry Callahan, Barbara Crane, Paul D’Amato, Bruce Davidson, Roy DeCarava, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Declan Haun, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Jack A. Jaffe, Don Leddick, Nathan Lerner, Stephen Marc, Ray K. Metzker, Richard Nickel, Gilles Peress, David Plowden, Art Shay, Aaron Siskind, Michael Smith, Joel Sternfeld, Bob Thall, and Garry Winogrand, among many additional exceptionally fine works.

The City: Harbor of Humanity features 150 selections from The Museum of Contemporary Photography’s permanent collection. The exhibition focuses on the city as a space infused with social, economic, cultural, and psychological meaning. The work included represents a wide range of styles, subject matter, places, historical periods, and photographic techniques.
